Artists and Place Studies

About

Background

Sue Michael is an artist based in Adelaide, Australia, who has spent many years documenting everyday life. Her first solo exhibition (of photography) was in 1998 entitled Sue Michael: Domestic Photographer. She has studied painting, art photography, as well as printmaking. She has completed a Visual Art PhD by Major Studio Project in 2018 at the University of South Australia with a thesis entitled: Expanded understandings of place making through genre painting: a heuristic study in the Mid North of South Australia.  Previous years spent nursing and as a volunteer in the Royal Adelaide Hopsital's Intensive Care Unit have shaped and grounded her holistic approach to visual art.

She was a foundation member of the Art and Place Research Group based at Prospect. This colony of artists participate in workshops, discussion groups and field trips to assist in comprehensively exploring  place. She was also Artist in Residence at the Mid North Knowledge Partnership, part of Flinders University, though based in the regional town of Burra. This has facilitated trans-disciplinary opportunities with researchers in Sweden and Canada. In 2018 she began an art residency at Adelaie University’s Geography Department.

Her volunteer work currently includes being the Living Arts Gallery volunteer at the Mary Potter Foundation, assisting with the display of artworks in the corridors of the Mary Potter Hospice, North Adelaide. Sue is also a member of PAAN - Prospect Arts Action Network affiliated with the Prospect Gallery, and is on the Community Reference Committee assisting with the planning of a new Prospect library, community centre and gallery.

Sue was a participant in the 2016/2017 TURPS Correspondence Course, London. She was a foundation student at the Centre for Creative Photography, Adelaide and is represented by West Gallery, Thebarton in Adelaide,  South Australia, and Rochfort Gallery, Sydney.
